A child’s home environment is one of the first exposures that a child has to ideas, especially ideas about other people, cultures, or lifestyles. Parents may not even realize that their child is listening and interpreting what is said. They often are listening and forming ideas about what they have heard. Social learning theorist believe that this can lead to the “formation of a stereotype, or idea about certain groups or populations, which can lead to more dangerous ideas, like prejudice, that could impact who the child becomes in the future” (Feldman, 2016, p. 445). It is not surprising that parents play such a vital role in the social development of their children. Parents are a child’s first hero with their approval holding a lot of meaning for the child.
