Themes of Art What is art about? Peoples throughout history have created visually meaningful art forms. This lecture will consider some broad themes that are commonly seen in art. Themes of Art Rathnasambhava, the Trancendent Buddha of the South, Tibet, 13 th Century, watercolor on cloth, is one of five Transcendent Buddhas that represent enlightened beings who have deferred their ultimate goal of nirvana-freedom from the cycle of birth, death and re- birth in order to help others obtain that goal. Art that depicts the sacred realm is often used for worship and devotion. The Sacred Realm: Artists whose subject matter turns to the world we can not see except through faith, the sacred realm and spirit. This includes Gods and Goddesses, sprits of ancestors, spirits of nature and other universal questions about existence (Getlein 49).
