Zak: I don’t believe in the use of hate crime laws for sentencing purposes as they’re used today. I don’t believe in the spirit or intent of the laws either. Hate crime laws are nothing more than an attempt to censor thought by trying to add punishment for thought behind punishment for actions. The idea that a person can be punished for saying something that is not directly inciteful should be hateful to any American that loves the freedoms afforded by the Bill of Rights of the Constitution. As far as the First Amendment goes, it does not allow anyone to say anything in all circumstances but does allow for a fairly wide array of awful speech that is protected. From racism to religion to communism and anarchy are all topics than not only can be discussed but openly talked about on public platforms and often are. The First Amendment allows parents to openly discuss false science that puts their children at risk of disease and the government can’t stop them legally. Among the few restrictions
