Business 485 Timetable & Work Program Orientation meeting will be offered in McDougall 329 , UPEI at noon on Friday September 11, 2015 (40 to 45 minute session) OPTIONAL. Introduction & orientation - September 9 - September 12, 2015 Course Preparation Assignment - Read Introduction pg.3 - 14 in the text and read the Journal requirements in Section I below. On-line Components Establish your Journal Contents of Journal Maintaining your Journal Setting your Outcome Personal Assessment of Management Skills Getting Started - SSS Software In-Basket Case (pg.21-30) items 1-16 only. Do the SSS Software in-basket exercise offline by recording your decisions for each of the 16 items in a notebook. It is important to keep the record because you will be asked to redo the exercise at the end of the course and see how your decisions have changed (or not) after taking the course. Stick to the 2 hour limit. Keep it as real as possible using only 2 hours to read the items,... think about it,... make your decision and record the decision. If you are unable to finish all items, then that is not an issue...simply note that the first time through you were unable to finish. You are also expected in the first week to participate in an online discussion about SSS Software . SSS Software is termed an "icebreaker" exercise to give you insight into what manager's actually do on a daily basis. In the typical business course you gather knowledge about the techniques and principles involved in the functional areas of business i.e. marketing, finance, etc. Yet any manger will tell you that you rarely use that knowledge on a daily basis. Instead you face situations similar to the SSS in-basket that require a whole set of other skills.

The topics in the introductory chapter will be the focus of our discussion (see pg. 3 - 14). It is not necessary to discuss online your specific decisions on the 16 items. Instead we will discuss the distinction between skills and knowledge needed by any manager. As you consider Chris's memos what kind of skills do you think are needed to handle the in-basket items? Now let's get started ...close this window by going to BUS 485. See "bulletins" i.e. the list of the discussion forums for each exercise and case ..... click on "Getting Started-SSS Software". Post your thoughts for us to read. This is basically the protocol throughout the course...after reading the textbook...see the list of exercise resources below bulletins. ---click open the exercise # or case assigned for the period [see "schedule" for work program] ... and read instructions for what you are to discuss in the bulletins forum...close...and go to "bulletins" to read postings by others and post your own responses. Self Awareness - September 13 - September 26 Do all the type tests at the beginning of the chapter; the Defining Issues Test,.. Cognitive Style Indicator,... Tolerance of Ambiguity,.. and CSES tests on pages 38-44 in the text. Score the tests and record results, findings, analysis etc. in your journal.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
