Chapter 6 1) stability/instability (stable versus unstable equilibrium) a air parcels (self-contained blobs of air). Examples of rising air parcels are thermals which hang gliding utilizes. 2) The atmosphere at a given location is stable if an embedded parcel which is suddenly forced upward and then released falls back to its original height. the atmosphere is unstable if such an air parcel, upon receiving an upward impulse, will continue to rise and, hence, move farther and farther away from its original position (height) An unstable atmosphere allows for rapidly rising motion. A rising stream of moist air parcels could potentially produce a thunderstorm. One of the primary purposes of this chapter is to determine the atmospheric conditions under which thunderstorms can form. 1. Stability/instability applies to sinking air parcels as well. If the atmosphere is unstable, any embedded sinking air parcel will continue to move downward away from its original height.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
