BELARUS INDEPENDENCE Belarus, often known as the “outpost of tyranny” 1 , ruled by President Alexander Lukashenko since 1994. Since the end of the cold war and the fall of the Soviet Union, Belarus has suffered economic decline and has been criticized for suppressing free speech, denying freedom of press and has alleged vote rigging to keep President Lukashenko in power. The current government is hindering the people and running the government as a dictatorship. I chose Belarus because of their corrupt government and the suppression of citizen rights.
