For this week I chose to review the article The Social Dynamics of the Mughal Empire: A Brief Introduction by J.C. Heesterman. In this article J.C. Heesterman talks about the work of Dirk Kolff who contributed significantly to focus attention on the working and enduring vitality of the social dynamics during the Mughal Empire (1526-1857) (Heesterman, 2004). Dirk Kolff studied India’s armed peasantry and used this to demonstrate the social dynamics of India. It is first demonstrated that the idea of an armed peasantry goes against what is typically associated with peasants who are typically leading a sedentary life against the warriors who fight for the rulers of the land. In the Mughul Empire, Dirk Kolff places the armed peasantry as the central focus of the social dynamics; the naukar, armed peasantry looking for a patron to faithfully serve, does not reflect a heirearchical system nor caste system. The naukar share in the success and wealth of his patron, a co-sharer in the realm and in the fortune of his patron (Heesterman, 2004). Balancing the powers between the
