Option 1- Answer question Choose an innovation of the Enlightenment/Scientific Revolution (roughly from the years 1550-1800). You can choose a discovery, a philosophical idea, a work of literature, etc. Discuss why this was such an important and revolutionary innovation. Next, discuss how this impacts modern society. The evolution of the steam engine was a very long process, which actually began in the 1 st Century by Hero of Alexandria. His idea of the Aeolipile, which took steam and forced it out of metal pipes rotating around cylinder. All of Hero of Alexandria’s work was forgotten about until the mid 16 th Century until it was rediscovered. It took nearly 100 more years before there was any idea of an industrial concept thought of for the use of steam. In 1630 David Ramsay received a patent “To Raise Water from Lowe Pitts by Fire” and “To Raise Water from Lowe Places and Mynes, and Coal Pitts, by a new Waie never yet in Use.” 1 This device was never created but planted the idea that steam could have an industrial function. It wasn’t until Thomas Newcomen was able to put together all of the ideas from previous inventors into one unit and take the evolution of the steam engine to a workable device with economic benefits.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
