How hurricanes are formed The warm water from the ocean heats the air above it. Then rising warm air evaporates and starts to rotate . Hurricane Ivan Born on September 2, 2004 and died out on September 24, 2004 Ivan caused major damage to Grenada as a Category 3 storm, heavy damage to Jamaica as a Category 4 storm and then Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands and the western tip of Cuba as a Category 5 storm. But after when Ivan reached his peaked the hurricane moved northwest to strike Pensacola/Milton, Florida and Alabama as a Category 3 storm. Hurricane Ivan was 270 miles wide and had windspeeds up to 160mph
