Keratinocytes- the cells that produce keratin, a fibrous protein that allows skin to have its protective effect. ii. Melanocytes- spider-shaped cells that produce melanin, a dark pigment iii. Tactile (Merkel) Cells- spiked-like hemisphere cell important for touch sensation iv. Langerhans Cells- star-shaped cells are macrophages that help activate our immune system v. Four Layers – Thin skin found all over the body except where thick thin is (Stratum Basle, Stratum Spinosum, Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Corneum) vi. Five Layers- Thin skin found on the palm of the hands and the sole of the feet ( Stratum Lucidum and the other 4) B. Dermis (strong flexible connective tissue with fibroblast, macrophages
