Article Review HPE 420 Health and Aging Fall 2017 Read the attached article. Highlight and make notes throughout the article. Type a two page paper (single spaced with double spaced in between paragraphs). On page one, summarize the article, and on page two, discuss what you gleaned from both articles including interesting, important, questionable, or useful information and application. Primarily the article includes the many benefits that come along with gardening as a health care initiative. It encourages nurses to use gardening to promote healthy eating habits which include the consumption of multiple fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. These benefits are fairly self- explanatory with the field that we are in. They include psychological benefits, physiological benefits, and a decrease in prevalence of chronic diseases particularly diseases that are preventable on the primary prevention portion of the three types of prevention. Due to the prevalence of heart disease and stroke, actually accounting for 40% of all deaths among the age group of 65-74 year olds and almost 60% of deaths among individuals who are 85 and up, a major aspect that is lacking in many older people’s lives appears to be physical activity and the consumption of adequate fruits and vegetables. This is often comorbid with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and the obesity epidemic. There is good news; however, gardening addresses these two concerns in more ways than one, but particularly in the target population of seniors that may would enjoy the addition of this for rehabilitation purposes, socialization skills, activities of daily living (ADLs) or for the overall health benefits experienced solely by adding in this one daily activity. The article implies that illnesses are prevented while continuing to keep individuals as healthy as possible. This includes financial benefits along the lines of having less insurance premiums for
