Ecology Feb 6 th 2018 Summary statistics: Measure of Central Tendency: o Helps identify probability of a variable. Mean : average of a set of values. Influenced by extreme values Useful in symmetric distributions Median : the middle value of a data set Not affected by few extreme high and low observations. Asymmetric distribution Mode : most common value in a dataset Measures of Spread: o Range : Difference between largest and smallest values Used when you report median o Standard Deviation : Describes the spread of data points around the mean. Low standard deviation: points clustered around mean High standard deviation: data points spread out over a large range. More peak like the stronger you feel about your mean data. Parametric Analysis o Used to test hypotheses, often making comparisons between group means Is one mean significantly higher than the other?
