Objectives Construct a packed bed for adsorption of methylene blue by charcoal. Generating a breakthrough concentration curve methylene blue adsorption on packed bed. Determination of breakthrough time, saturation time of the bed. Determination of usable and unusable bed & total bed length. Introduction Adsorption may be defined as selective concentration or retention of one or more components of a mixture on a solid surface. The solid that adsorbs a component is called the adsorbent, and the component adsorbed is called the adsorbate. The adsorption process is a result of interaction between the adsorbate molecules and the surface (or pore wall) of the adsorbent. The selective transfer of some of the molecules of a mixture to the surface or into the bulk of a solid (or a liquid) is called sorption. The term sorption is used in a more general sense and includes both adsorption and absorption. When the sorbed molecules or atoms remain concentrated or accumulated at or near the surface, the process is called adsorption. But if these sorbed molecules are distributed throughout a liquid phase, the process is called absorption. The uptake of a gas or a liquid by a polymer is also called sorption. The adsorption phenomenon provides an excellent method of separation of a variety of fluid mixtures, particularly at low concentrations, and as such it is recognized as an important mass transfer operation. It may be noted that adsorption may occur on a liquid surface too, but it is of less practical importance than adsorption in a solid. Adsorption of a substance on a solid surface occurs because of an ‘affinity’ of the surface for the particular substance. It is natural that the surface will have varying affinity for different substances. For example, activated alumina has a strong affinity for moisture, but not for hydrocarbons. Thus, audaciously selected adsorbent preferentially adsorbs the targeted compounds from a mixture thereby acting as a medium of separation. [1,2] Important term related to fixed bed adsorber This adsorption process is characterized by mass transfer zone, superficial velocity of fluid, used bed height before breakthrough & saturation capacity of adsorbent by which a setup for industrial task can be designed.
