Kane’s innocence before Thatcher took it away and corrupted him to be a money hungry man. When Kane died, he was reflecting on what he used to be which is a decent person by saying “rosebud”. The central theme that is being portrayed in this film is how one certain situation has the potential to change us as a person. We spend the entire film attempting to figure out how Kane became the man he died as. Seeing the word “rosebud” on the sled gave us the answer to that without ever explaining it in dialogue. This image being present as text in the film forces the viewers to infer that the sled was Kane’s turning point in his struggle with his loss of innocence. Blade Runner on the other hand stresses material presence, which is the image as presence, rather than image as text. The main image in this film is a “replicant”. A replicant is a robot that is constructed to look identical to a human in every way. They are even given memories to make them believe they are real as well. The only way to figure out if someone is a replicant or not is through a test that elicits emotional answers to questions. Replicants are supposed to have different answers to these questions than
