18th Century Oil Canvas Paintings I’ve always had an interest in this specific time period and the art that was created during this time. This type of art has been with me throughout my childhood. My mother would have various paintings hanging up throughout the house and I remember as a young child always being so interested in the depth and style that has influenced the creation of these art pieces.18th century art captures the lifestyle and genre of this time. New ideas were developing and interacting with each other which shaped and captured much of the culture and lifestyle which is really fascinating to me. The 18th century was referred to as a time of enlightenment which incorporated new and conflicting styles and techniques. These neoclassical ideas are best represented in portraiture and landscape paintings which grew popularity as artist started representing one’s social status in their pieces. Incorporating models and guides as examples really captures the symbolism of this time and the social change that was occurring throughout this time and throughout the art culture. It gives this type of art a better dimension and reality of what type of materials they had available and used to create these beautiful pieces and different ways they improvised. The process of creating oil paint is very interesting and it is quite a simple form, yet very different from much of the other types of mediums used. This time period has always captured my eye in a certain way. When I’m looking at these different pieces of art I feel drawn to it like I have an unspoken connection to this time period. I would like to learn so much more about the different techniques that were created and the different styles that were developed and implemented throughout this specific type of art and throughout the century. I would also like to gain a better insight on the various materials that the artists used and also a better understanding of the history of each piece of art as each holds it’s own unique story and how the enlightenment movement influenced their creativity.

This time period was referred to as the Enlightenment era and the end to the Rococo style of art. The Enlightenment period influenced the style of art known as Neoclassicism. This prepared the way for the progress of the century and shaped the culture and artistic styles. By this time, painting with oil became one of the most well known artistic techniques by the benefits of the richness of the colors, the easiness of blending, variety of consistencies, and the overall beautiful pieces painting with oil created. Oil painters during this time were influences by two styles of art which were the Rococo and the later developed Neoclassicism. Oil paint at this time captured various colors and shadows as well as the depth within the image and overall a very realistic look. Oil paint gained
