Designated wine regions in Germany include: The Ahr Mosel -Saar-Ruwer Mittelrhein Franken Nahe Baden Rheingau Wurttemberg Rheinhessen Hessische Bergstrasse Rheinpfalz Wines from Germany Germany has more than 50,000 acres of Riesling, no other country comes close. (Australia has 10,000) Germany has been growing Riesling since 1435!! 50 Years ago, most German wines were very dry and very acidic. Even in finer restaurants, you’d be offered a spoonful of sugar with a German wine to balance the acidity. Although many other regions of the world have planted German vines-none have succeeded in capturing the many complexities of flavor in German white wines. 2 Riesling Aromatic white grape variety, high acidity Fruity and floral aromas Cool climate Green fruit flavors (green apple, grape), floral notes, and a hint of citrus fruit (lemon, lime) Moderate climate Citrus and stone fruit flavors dominant Susceptible to noble rot Ideal for sweet wines Can be aged in the bottle Honey and toasty flavors, sometimes petrol-like aromas Never use new oak Riesling or Johannisber Riesling- The most noble vine in Germany. Accounts for 25% of all vines in the country. Sylvaner- The 2 nd most popular grape which accounts for 10% of vines in Germany. Muller-Thurgau- – A cross between Riesling and Sylvaner. (also known as Rivaner) Granburgunder (Pinot Gris) The drier of the 2 Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc)- A more refreshing acidity than the Granburgunder. Major German Grape Varieties- White Wines Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir)- – Crisper and lighter than its French counterpart. This is the major red wine of Germany and accounts for 7% of the total vineyards. Ripens late in the season and it is the Riesling’s counterpart. Dornfelder- – A newcomer to German Wines Portugieser- – Originated in the Danube River Valley. This wine has a mild acidity. Major German Grape Varieties- Red Wines German Wine Classification 1. Qualitätswein mit Prädikat (QmP) Quality wine determined by the degree of ripeness at harvest 2. Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete (QbA) Quality wine from one of the 13 major regions 3. Landwein Regional wine 4. Tafelwein Table wine
