By 404 BC, the Spartans were the hegemons of Greece. By 371 BC they had lost the position of hegemon to Thebes. By 362 BC, Theban hegemony had faded. In your opinion, why was an enduring hegemony by any one of the dominant poleis so hard to maintain in 4th century (BC) Greece? What factors prevented this from occurring? When the Athenian army on Sicily was destroyed, the Spartan declared war 1 and they occupied the Decelea near Athens suggested by Alcibiades. Then in 412 B.C., the Spartans had an alliance with Persian. However, it’s not good to have a treaty with devils. With Persian money, the Spartans built a navy and challenged Athens’ naval dominance in the Aegean. Indeed, the new Spartan presence provoked revolution in Athens’ possessions in Ionia. Then the returning of Alcibiades to service in the Athenian fleet helps Athens have a temporarily victory. Lysander final defeat Athens in 405 BCE. And in 404 BCE, Athens surrendered and were occupied by the Spartan army. The Athenian
