How did Rome's imperial expansion alter the social and economic framework of the Roman Republic? After I learned from books and watched lectures of chapter 3 and 4, I have some understandings of the expansion of Rome in Italy and there are some important events related to it, like the three Punic wars with some influence to Rome, either positive or negative. However, in chapter 3 and 4, we can see that the expansion of Rome brings huge influence to it in an area of the social and economic framework through conflicts with other powerful enemies, like Carthage. In the first Punic war, Rome defeats the Carthage and they forced Carthaginians to leave Sicily and request an indemnity of 17 million denarii which is a huge number at that time. During this war, Rome developed a strong naval army which they did not have in the past. They invented a device named Corvus which could help them go into enemies’ board and kill them in their ships. (The history factory) The ownership of Sicily is Rome first time to have a permanent commitment outside Italy. The word “provinces” was called
