Describe in some detail the Athenian decision to send an expeditionary force to Sicily. What were the origins of this expedition? What arguments did Alcibiades use to convince the Athenians to approve the attack of Sicily (6.16-18)? Why, in your opinion, did the Sicilian expedition fail? Before describing the Athenian decision to send an expeditionary to SICILY, a young man should be introduced named Alcibiades. He is bold and dynamic and he has a great look. He is also a great public speaker. He was considered the most gifted of Athens’ younger generation. In 420, Alcibiades became strategos and called for a renewal of war under his leadership. An opportunity appears when representatives from the island of Sicily arrive in Athens. By the way, Sicily is a very prosperous. But they are still connected to the Greek Wolrd; representatives from a Sicilian city-state want to enlist Athenians’ aid in a fight against a rival city-state. Alcibiades sees opportunity, so he immediately puts forth a plan by which Athens send a military force to Sicily. His ideas gain
