What were the actions and behaviors of Antony that Octavian exploited to justify a declaration of war (and the Battle of Actium)? After Caesar was assassinated, his adopted child Octavius inherits his name and his authority calling himself “Caesar”. As we all know, Antony is a faithful supporter of Caesar. However, a great number of senators had supported Caesar’s assassination, so none of them trusted Antony. Moreover, common people had loved Caesar, thus they are more tending to support Antony. It aroused dislike from senators. ( The history factory ) In the battle of Mutina in the summer of 43 BCE, Antony and his army surrounded a town in northern Italy because of a renegade proconsul and assassin of Caesar named Decimus Brutus. This person refused to give up the army when Antony was trying to force him out. At that time, senators thought it was a good chance to get rid of him, so they send Octavian with tow consuls to help Brutus. Eventually, the two consuls died but Antony was retreated and left Octavian in charge of the senatorial army. Then his
