FUEL EFFICIENCY Abstract This paper aims to analyze various measurements that have been adopted to improve fuel efficiency. The paper will provide a detailed analysis of various strategies being adopted by airlines to improve fuel efficiency. The fuel efficiency in aviation industry concerns not only with lower usage of fuel, but it also aims at to lessening the impact on the environment. Airlines constantly aim at reducing fuel consumption due to volatility in the energy markets. Furthermore, the fuel costs is around 40% of the total revenue for the airlines. The fuel consumption is directly related to the weight the aircraft carrier and the distance it travels. Technology plays an important role in the fuel reduction initiatives. The use of technology on the ground and in air operations can be optimized to reduce fuel consumption.

FUEL EFFICIENCY The global airline industry has been growing rapidly, and there has been an increased demand for low-cost carriers. In terms of revenue, the industry was at $369 billion in 2004 which have grown to $746 billion in 2014. The air traffic is predicted to grow by 5% per annum by 2026, and therefore the fuel demand would also increase annually by 3 %. There can be a substantial jet fuel shortage by 2026 (McKinnon, Browne, Piecyk, & Whiteing, 2015). Even today the fuel cost forms 40% of overall costs of airlines. This huge fuel consumption also affects the environment as each liter of fuel burnt leads to 3.16 kg of CO2 emissions (McKinnon, Browne, Piecyk, & Whiteing, 2015).
