Introduction Societal norms are an important aspect of a society. A society without norms is an impossibility. This is because, in the absence of norms, human behavior would become unpredictable. The societal norms establish standards for behavior that gives symmetry to social relations. In other words, societal norms refer to the morality and values that act as a guide to both people and their relations with other individuals and the overall society. On the other hand, ethics is a critical and detailed analysis of the morality and the values that shape an individual’s conduct in a community or society. The purpose of this research paper is to determine the impact of societal norms on the ethics. It is a fact that societal norms and ethics are interrelated. The norms of the society form the basis of the individual’ behavior and interaction with each other and in isolation too. Ethics can be considered as moral principles that conduct the behavior of an individual in a society. This research intends to comprehend how does the different norms of a society influence ethics of an individual or the society on the whole. In addition, the research paper will also find out the intensity of the influence. The paper would be a profound manifestation of the society and its values that change the ethical behavior within a society. Method A researcher has to take a decision in relation to the methods he/she will employ for the research purposes in the field. There are a variety of choices. In the field of anthropology, many times, researchers employ research methods wherein they reflect an individual’s views based on their understanding and the knowledge acquired from the study and their residing in the same society. The researchers believe that he/she is competent to think and act within the viewpoints of the society under consideration (Powdermaker 1966; Vidich 1955). However, this approach may not produce desired results as an individual under study or observation may get influenced by the research topic and give ambiguous

opinions and results. This approach is also not preferred as this research is more open-ended and therefore generates huge data that is not constructive. On the other hand, there is another approach that takes the help of a survey questionnaire that is analyzed to develop a framework of thinking and followed by a conclusion (Lazarsfeld 1944; Seltiz et al 1964). This approach is more productive as it offers quick results without influencing or troubling the users. A questionnaire is designed to focus on the needs of the study. For this research paper, a comprehensive questionnaire was prepared. This questionnaire was used to survey people from different communities and cities on the topic of societal norms and ethics. The sample of the population under survey ranged from urban to country sides, different religions and communities with different beliefs.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
