Not everyone is comfortable talking about the health of themselves or their family members having serious illnesses such as heart disease or cancer. Solution: Move the question to near the bottom of the survey where the respondent has had the opportunity to gain your trust in the question being asked. Also add a statement at the end of the question of ( Please remember that all information in this survey will be reported anonymously) so they understand their privacy is being protected. 2. Problem: Leading questions. The sentence of “many people participate in exercise to maintain and improve their level of fitness” prompts the respondent to respond to the question in a manner which is socially appealing. Even if they do not participate in exercise they do not want to appear to be unfit or to not care about their level of health. Solution Remove the beginning statement.
