Introducing Social Psychology What is Social Psychology o Social Psychology: the scientific study of how people think about, influence, and relate to one another. Focuses more on individuals with methods that more often use experimentation Focuses less on differences among individuals, and more on how individuals view and affect one another Social Psychology’s Big Ideas We Construct Our Social Reality o We humans have an irresistible urge to explain behavior, to attribute it to some cause, and therefore to make it seem orderly, predictable, and controllable. o There is an objective reality out there; but we always view the lens of our beliefs and values. Our Social Intuitions Are Often Powerful but Sometimes Perilous o Instant intuitions shape our fears, relationships, and impressions o Thinking, memory, and attitudes all operate on two levels- one conscious and deliberate, the other unconscious and automatic o Intuition is huge bur is also perilous
