Team Dynamics: Case Studies The following are fictional cases of project teams and some of the experiences and challenges faced throughout their projects. The examples are meant to be representative of the kinds of experiences reported by students, in past and current years. Case 1: During the first project, the team made satisfactory progress and received a grade of C+. Most team members were not satisfied with their mark and felt they were capable of better performance. Early on in the project, one of the quieter members felt quite strongly that the team was not taking the right approach to one part of the project and tried to introduce some new possibilities. The team considered the ideas for a short period of time, but the topic of conversation changed and the team did not go back to finalize the conversation or change their course. The feedback from the Professor on Project 1 indicated the quieter members’ suggestion was correct. Had they changed their approach, it is very likely they would have achieved a higher mark. The team members signed the team agreement that stated each person would contribute equally and fairly to the project. They agreed if team members weren’t pulling their weight, the team would deal with that openly and resolve issues when they divided tasks. Upon reflection, members pointed out the following patterns in their team’s functioning: There tended to be 3-4 members who regularly offered ideas, contributed to conversations, and worked on the project. The remaining members were much less likely to participate in conversations and overall were contributing significantly less towards the project. It was observed that low participation members were hesitant to offer their own ideas and input, particularly when other members were already contributing. The divide between high and low participators grew as the project went on. High participators: Felt overburdened and were frustrated with the lack of fairness in the way the work ended up being distributed. Low participators: Felt undervalued, disengaged and uncertain about the role they should be playing in the group.
