Where in the World is Timbuk2 Questions 1. Go to . Spend a few minutes on the website, looking at the different products offered, and seeing the short video under Corporate Information About Us Manufacturing San Francisco ( ). In the video, try to see how the manufacturing is set up. (To get the two points, just include a statement in your paper that everyone in the group saw the video.) 2 points Everyone watched the video 2. Describe the key supply chain capabilities that are necessary to offer mass customization? In this discussion, consider decisions relating to product variety to offer, customer order taking, distribution and order delivery, inventory, manufacturing, and procurement. You can discuss these aspects within your group. To help with providing a background about mass customization, I have attached two articles. 15 points Mass customization often stresses the manufacturing and supply chain channels. It entails postponing of the task of differentiating a product for a specific customer until the latest possible time/point in the supply network. The supply chain capabilities required to support the mass customization are, (1) Identifying the product attributes along which customer diverge: Contrary to a mass producer who stresses on knowing the central tendencies of customers, a mass customizer stresses on meeting unique/distinctive demands of the customer. By doing this the latest point (after which differentiation must be done) could be identified. Conventional ways of buying goods (through wholesaler and retailer) is phasing out as mass customization challenges this process and tends to eliminate these mediators in the value chain. The new concept is bringing out disintermediation and opening out the direct channels from manufacturer to consumer directly. Customer order taking through channels like web portals (as is the case with Timak2) is an effective method which could also be used to define the degree of customization to be offered, based on inventory safety stock, manufacturing, procurement and distribution capabilities. (2) Reusing or recombining existing resources: Flexible process and adaptive human capital (achieved through Lean processes and Agile systems) were two important aspects of Timbak2’s operations that supported this capability. Again the product variety that is to be offered has a clear impact on production and sourcing capabilities. Lean Process Perfect flow of information achieved through lean manufacturing concepts (i.e. what to make and how to make) eliminated waste from the process. Further small nitty-gritties like Layout of the shop floor and sequence of operations of employee also resulted in increased productivity and less wastage.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
