Rivas 1 Valerie Rivas Mrs. Weaston English III – 2 1 November 2016 Should Guns Permitted on College Campuses? There have been over 45 mass shootings just last year, in 2015. Imagine how many of those victim’s lives could have been saved by a nearby concealed-carry holder. Over the past years, there have been some controversy between the states and the people of America about whether guns should be permitted on college campuses or not. Permitting guns on college campuses has been an issue that has been standing in argument for long due to so many unpredictable, belligerent mass shootings and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Persian Gulf War Veteran Roberts S. Flores, 41, and failing student at the University of Arizona’s college of Nursing murdered three of his nursing professors before ordering the students out of the classroom to then commit suicide (Smith, LA times). On September 3 rd , 2015, a student attending Sacramento City College in Sacramento, California shot three people, fatally effecting one and injuring two (Time). Another massive shooting took place on February 14, 2008 at Northern Illinois University. At least twenty-one students were shot, 6 of them fatally including the shooter who happened to commit suicide. The shooter, however, was not a student (abc7Chicago). Professor Amy Bishop, 45, was a neurologist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville who killed three of her colleagues and additionally shot three more at a biology faculty meeting (Fausset, LA times). Even though some debaters will claim that gun-zone campuses will result in a higher potential for mass shootings, guns should still be permitted on college campuses because it makes people feel safer, citizens will be

Rivas 2 able to defend themselves in such severe shooting situations, and because criminals will, either way, always find a way to obtain firearms regardless of any rules or laws. Gun free zones make people feel safer. Concealed-carry permit holders have better safety records than police officers. Verily, more criminals are stopped and/or killed by law-abiding citizens than law enforcement (Huntwork, Gale). In fact, statistics even show that gun-free zones are not always safer (Guns and Crime, Gale). That goes to shows that citizens usually apply for a
