Unit 1 Handout No 7 Dr S Deo Identifying whether arguments are Inductive or Deductive CHARACTERISTICS OF INDUCTIVE ARGUMENTS: 1. Form of the argument is ‘Some to All’, ‘Observed to Unobserved’. ‘Present to future’. 2. Conclusion gives extra information than stated in the premises. 3. Premises do not offer sufficient evidence in support of the conclusion. 4. Reasons offered do not necessarily lead to the conclusion. 5. Hence there is degree of probability and not certainty of the conclusion being right. 6. Premise may be true, but conclusion false. 7. Premise may be false but conclusion may be true. 8. Good Inductive argument can lead to almost certain conclusion, but still there could be an element of doubt. EXAMPLES OF INDUCTIVE ARGUMENTS 1. A man is talking to Anand in the room. Oh, that must be his father. 2. Anand’s father sounds very angry. Sure he must be under some stress. 3. Anand is looking very happy. His father must have given him some money.
