Middle East Technical University - NCC EEE202 - Circuits Theory II Laboratory 1 EXPERIMENT 3 SEMICONDUCTOR JUNCTION AND ZENER DIODES Abstract The V-I characteristics of silicon and germanium diodes are investigated. Several diode circuits are designed and their performances are determined. The V-I characteristics of a zener diode is obtained and several zener diode circuits are studied. Preliminary Work 1. List the aim of using junction and zener diodes in electronic circuits. What is the difference between PN junction diodes and zener diodes? 2. You will find V-I characteristics of a diode in this lab, so to prepare it: A common piecewise linear model for a junction diode is given in Fig. 1. Figure 1 a. The reverse saturation current I S of a germanium PN junction diode is given to be 2.5x10 -7 A and the junction temperature T = 20 C. Calculate and plot on graph paper the volt-ampere characteristics. (Calculate i d for V d = -0.4, -0.2, 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3 and 0.4 volts.) Determine the piecewise linear model parameters for this diode, i.e., r f , r r and V O , using the V-I plot. (Hint, datasheet published by ON Semiconductor is adequate.)
