Middle East Technical University - NCC EEE202 - Circuits Theory II Laboratory 1 EXPERIMENT 3 SEMICONDUCTOR JUNCTION AND ZENER DIODES Abstract The V-I characteristics of silicon and germanium diodes are investigated. Several diode circuits are designed and their performances are determined. The V-I characteristics of a zener diode is obtained and several zener diode circuits are studied. Preliminary Work 1. List the aim of using junction and zener diodes in electronic circuits. What is the difference between PN junction diodes and zener diodes? 2. You will find V-I characteristics of a diode in this lab, so to prepare it: A common piecewise linear model for a junction diode is given in Fig. 1. Figure 1 a. The reverse saturation current I S of a germanium PN junction diode is given to be 2.5x10 -7 A and the junction temperature T = 20 C. Calculate and plot on graph paper the volt-ampere characteristics. (Calculate i d for V d = -0.4, -0.2, 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3 and 0.4 volts.) In that calculation use: 𝑖 𝐷 = 𝐼 𝑠 ∙ [𝑒 𝑣 𝑑 𝑛∙𝑉 𝑇 ] 𝑉 𝑇 = 𝑘 ∙ 𝑇 𝑞 V D i D i D V D Slope = 1 r r Slope = 1 r f i D V D r r r f V O V O V O Ideal diodes 0

Middle East Technical University - NCC EEE202 - Circuits Theory II Laboratory 2 Where; n = is typically 1 k = Boltzmann's constant = 1.38 x 10 -23 joules/kelvin T = Absolute temperature in K = 273 + temperature in °C q = Magnitude of electronic charge = 1.60 x 10 -19 coulomb Using obtained V-I plot, find the piecewise linear model parameters for this diode, i.e., r f , r r and V O . (You will need this model in EXPERIMENT IV, so take a note) b. Obtain V-I characteristics of 1N4001 generic silicon diode through its datasheet. Determine the piecewise linear model parameters for this diode, i.e., r f , r r and V O , using the V-I plot. (Hint, datasheet published by ON Semiconductor is adequate.)

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
