Culling 1 Campbell Culling ART 130: Art Appreciation Jambard-Stewart 19 November 2017 Assignment #2: Protestant Reformation and Art Art is sculpted by the events that transpired before it. For example, the art produced today is a product influenced by the history since. The Last Supper would never have been painted if Jesus had never been born, or never met with his apostles. The Sistine Chapel would never have been painted had Michelangelo never been commissioned by the church. Every event that occurs throughout history plays a role in the world we live in today, especially in the artwork we see to- day. One historical event that had a tremendous impact on art is the Protestant Reformation. This was a 16th-century religious, political, intellectual and cultural upheaval that hurt Catholic Europe, setting beliefs that would define the continent in the modern era. The beginning of the reformation is said to have started because of one man, the German Augustinian monk Martin Luther, believed the Roman Catholic Church had been corrupted and lost its original focus. In 1517 he nailed 95 Theses to a church door in Wittenberg, which were against the use and abuse of indulgences. Luther claimed that the repentance required by Christ in order for sins to be for- given involves inner spiritual repentance rather than merely external sacramental confession.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
