Matthew Marino AML 2580-01 Jason Dubow May 27, 2015 Essay #11: Many of these films and stories that I have learned from tell different stories. Each text revolves around Vietnam and how it has affected those who close to it. The film Jacob’s Ladder takes place during the war and after the war. A confusing movie at first we learn that everything that has been happening is Jacob’s purgatory as he lay dying in Vietnam. Although this is a very interesting aspect of the movie, what really intrigues me is the biblical motif of the movie. All the characters in the film are named after biblical figures with Michael and Gabriel being the most known. These two characters represent the Archangel’s who in this story help Jacob find peace and bring him into heaven. Another fascinating theme in the movie is the title, coming from Genesis 28:10-12 which tells the story of how Jacob had a dream of climbing a ladder into Heaven. I think this
