Matthew Marino AML 2580-01 Jason Dubow May 14, 2015 Essay #5: When Talking Isn’t Enough Writing has taken the form of emails or text messages in our world today, becoming daily actives we do not put much effort into. For the men who fought in Vietnam in the 1960’s and 1970’s it became much more than a form of communication. It became a form of expression, through letters, memoirs or by writing stories. When talking isn’t enough, writing became a way to grief, remember, and deal with the pain. In Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam many soldiers wrote to their family for reasons anyone else would, but there were many who wrote because they felt the need to. They felt they needed to write because in a way it was therapeutic. Whether the literature is from a soldier to his family, a veteran to the public, or soldiers who fought together, they help to deal with the hurt of war. The main concept of this movie is to tell the story of Vietnam through the letters from soldiers to home. This did not only help me to grasp a better understanding of the
