Matthew Marino AML 2580-01 Jason Dubow May 19, 2015 Essay #6: The Madness of War People change everyday, all around us, whether we notice it or not. Change occurs to everyone, in everyone. It happens. As a result of many different things: the birth of a child, getting married, the death of a loved one, and war. Especially war. While we may not notice all types of change in people, the change from sanity to madness is always prevalent. In both Apocalypse Now and The Things They Carried the characters change as they experience war and demonstrate the effect that overwhelming horror has on their minds. The stories that are being told about the characters of both works helped me to better understand the intensity of war through the madness they continuously face. Throughout the film Apocalypse Now the characters that the movie follows experience an increasing sense of madness as the progress further toward their final destination. As they learn more about the horrors of war, unbeknownst to themselves, their sanity develops into insanity. Toward the beginning of the movie when Willard is
