Matthew Marino AML 2580-01 Jason Dubow May 20, 2015 Essay #7: The Russian Roulette of Adjustment War is hell, especially when it is fought for unclear reasons and no real motive. That was Vietnam. Many young men were drafted or volunteered, which was the case in The Deer Hunter . Posttraumatic stress disorder is common in soldiers who have returned from war, but during the 60’s and 70’s it was not really understood. This made it more difficult for soldiers because they did not have any to talk to who understood what they were going through. After watching The Deer Hunter and reading the story “Notes” I began to understand this idea more. For the characters of Nick, Mike, Steven and Norman Bowker, adjusting to live after all their experiences isn’t easy or possible. In The Deer Hunter the main characters Nick, Mike and Steven were all shown to be happy, laidback, carefree guys. All three decided to volunteer to fight in Vietnam, but when their fighting was over nothing was the same for them. A major part of this film is
