War and American Society Written Assignment 5 Tawanda McCrae March 5, 2018 The Spanish-American war started solely on the premise that it was the manifest destiny of America to expand foreign land holdings and elevate the status of the US as a major world power. When Ambassador John Hay referred to this conflict as “the splendid little war”, he saw the success of American objectives achieved in under three months with less than 300 soldiers killed as the making of a quick and easy victory for the United States. During the process of this relatively bloodless war, the United States was able to assert itself as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage. Cuba was of great interest to the United States as it was their first sentiment towards imperialism, American government had concluded that in order to achieve status as a world power an empire must be taken away from someone else and be folded into the United States as a foreign colony.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
