War and American Society Written Assignment 3 (Part 1) Tawanda McCrae February 18, 2018 Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” centers on the idea that government is best which governs least. “We should be men first and subjects second” was another of Thoreau’s views on government, he believed that government could not function without a conscience and it was every man’s duty to apply his humanity to governing. His philosophy stated that law never made men any more just; therefore, the law becomes a weapon of men and used to advance their personal agenda. He believed that government existed for the sole purpose of ensuring individual freedom, but was also susceptible to misuse. Thoreau was strongly opposed to the Mexican war and once spent a night in jail for refusal to pay his poll tax; this was in protest to the government that waged the Mexican war. The Mexican war was started due to the desire for Americans to fulfill their manifest destiny, which was complete control of the continent from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
