ECON 498/598: Public Finance Department of Economics Concordia University Time and Location: Friday, 8:45 11:30, Hall Building, Room H 523 SGU Instructor : Mehrab Kiarsi E-mail: [email protected] (514) 848 2424 ext. 8680 Office Hours: by appointment (send me an email) Course Overview and Content : The course is designed to emphasize some important and modern topics on fiscal and monetary policy and the interaction between them in the context of closed economies and open economy macroeconomic models and in the context of Dynamic General Equilibrium (DGE) models. We will discuss monetary policy in an intertemporal framework. After discussing and reviewing a two-period model learned in intermediate-level macro courses, we extend the framework to infinite period models and will discuss and study optimal policy (fiscal and monetary both) in the context of models with flexible prices. We will then study optimal monetary policy in the presence of nominal rigidities in prices. We will also consider optimal debt and taxation policy and the sustainability of the fiscal stance.
