Species change: others before Darwin, including Lamarck, had suggested that species are not fixed and perfect, but change and adapt. ii. Species are related by descent: Darwin was the first to argue clearly that all species are related by descent from common ancestors through a branching Tree of Life. b. Aristotle i. Great chain of being 1. He thought it was a divine plan, not evolution. 2. Scale of nature model assumes order. However, they did not derive in that order and some are still alive today which suggests that order is incorrect. 3. They do not derive from the previous but rather share an ancestor. 4. Also depicts inferiority and superiority. c. Problems & portents i. Scientific revolution 1. Nicolaus Copernicus 1473-1543 2. Galileo Galilei 1564-1642 3. Johannes Kepler 1571-1630 4. Isaac Newton 1643-1727 5. Antoine Lavoisier 1743-1794 6. Joseph Priestley 1733-1804 7. Charles Darwin 1809-1882 ii. Linnaean classification 1. Depicts descent with modification, phylogeny, tree of life.
