David Petroni 2/13/17 Bus 189 Cola Wars Continue Case Coke and Pepsi have only become as big as they are today due to their competition with each other in the carbonated soft drink industry or CSD industry. Both companies saw their growth in sales rise 10% throughout the years in the 1970’s. Their growth later stopped as their industry received less and less new and returning customers due to other options and sociocultural shifts in the late 2000’s. There are four distinct participants in carbonated drink industry starting with suppliers, then to bottlers and concentrate producers and finally retail channels. The supply needed was mainly packaging and ingredients for the concentrate. This provided bottlers with what was needed to get the product ready for shipment. Coke and Pepsi combined owned about 72% of the industry in 2009 and the number of bottlers had dropped from 2,000 in 1970 to 300. Bottlers then send out the soft drinks to retail channels that sold the drinks to consumers. CSD sales accounted for 4% of total store sales equating to 12 billion
