Midterm Mean: 14.7 Cross-Cultural Misperception: - perception is selective -> too much stimuli; screen out overload - perceptual patterns are learned -> experience teaches - perception is culturally determined -> based on cultural background - perception is consistent -> once we see something in a particular way we tend to continue to see it that way - perception is inaccurate -> we see things that do not exist and do not see things that do exist; our background, values, interests, and culture act as filters and lead us to distort, block, and even create what we chose not to see and hear, what we have been trained to hear Cultural Misinterpretations: - stereotypes -> the first best guess about a group prior to acquiring information about the specific person(s) involved -> consciously held -> awareness that the description is a group norm rather than the characteristics of a specific individual -> descriptive rather than evaluative -> should describe what the people from this particular group will
