CNPS 427 Assignment 1 1. While the terms counselling and guidance are often used interchangeably by the general public, the profession recognizes these terms as having different meanings. Briefly point out some of these differences. One of the key differences between counselling and guidance is the requirement of certification. Counselling is offered by certified professionals whose goal is to find the causation of an individual’s problems and fix it at the root level. There are multiple branches under the counselling umbrella, such as workplace counselling, eating disorder treatment, education, marriage etc. Counselling usually delves deep into one’s problems and would require the individual to discuss personal information with the counsellor that one would not usually disclose openly. On the contrary, guidance requires no certification or professional title. It comes in the form of advice or opinions and can be provided by anyone who is willing to share their experience. Guidance is usually offered by an individual with more experience in a certain area to an individual with lesser experience in order to help them overcome a situation. While guidance can be viewed as more of a mentor-mentee like relationship, counselling is a relationship that focuses on one’s personal growth. It helps them realize the root of their problem and lets the individual himself discover a way to overcome their struggles. This differs from guidance, where the one giving guidance will usually provide a decision.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
