Abigail Smith and Caitlyn Henderson Mr. Stone Global Studies 3A Nov. 24, 2014 Pericles’ Funeral Oration Essay Pericles lived in Athens as a well-known general. He gave the speech during the Peloponnesian War. The purpose of the speech is to honor the fallen soldiers and make the mourning survivors excited about their country. Pericles tells an exaggerated truth about the use of wealth, public participation, and military policy. The use of wealth according to Pericles is under exaggerated. Pericles states, “wealth we employ more for use than for show” (PFO) and, “the mother country has been furnished by us with everything that can enable her to depend on her own resources whether for war or for peace” (PFO). This is under exaggerated because of history, “the most conspicuous and ultimately most famous architectural monuments of the fifth century were paid for by public revenues” (Martin, web) and “the Parthenon and the propylaia alone easily cost more than the
