Little 1 Danielle Little Dr . Comstock Writing 101 April 25, 2017 Flat Earth “This is not even a conspiracy . The Earth is flat . The Earth is flat . The Earth is flat . All these things that particular groups, I won’t even pinpoint one group, that they almost offer up this education . The fact that, in our lifetimes, that there are so many holes and so many pockets in our history I’m telling you, it is right in front of our faces . They lie to us …” (Abad-Santos) . The starting point guard for the 2016 National Basketball Association Champions, the Cleveland Cavaliers, believes the earth is flat . K yrie Irving shocked media outlets when he revealed his strange belief on a teammate’s podcast in early March . Despite the media uproar, Irving's comments aren’t as left field as they may seem . In fact, there are a vast amount of people who share Irving’s belief including a society dedicated to proving it . The flat earth theory never ceased to exist after it was disproven . Even after it was widely accepted amongst scientists and scholars, small groups and organizations still kept the idea alive . So where did this idea come from and how did it manage to resurface in modern media? Different forms of the flat earth theory can be found in various ancient texts from tribes and civilizations that predated Greece . People believed that the earth was a flat disk and the sky was a spherical dome above it . This explains the pre-Hellenistic maps, before 323 BC, and perpetuated sailor legends that they could fall off the edge of the earth if they sailed too far in

Little 2 one direction . Even after the Greek Philosopher Pythagoras began to argue the earth was round, it wasn’t fully accepted until during the Hellenistic period . Once the Catholic Church also accepted and endorsed the idea that the earth was round it became undisputable, or so people thought . Despite the overwhelming scientific evidence that the earth is round, the flat earth theory has survived to present day media, but how? Denial of facts in order to perpetuate one’s own ideas is a rudimentary form of bullshit .
