Answer the following questions as you work through your study to build a strong and successful essay. Your Assignment In this activity, you'll be writing an explanatory essay about the heroic attributes of Odysseus. You'll look at specific descriptions and choose strong examples to support your explanation. This writing assignment will focus on the following skills: Writing an explanatory essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion Developing a strong introduction paragraph Using relevant evidence from the text Write the definitions of the following words. If you come across a word you don't know, write it in a blank space below. Try to figure out what the word means by looking at its context. Then use your dictionary or the Internet to look up the correct definition for the word. Word Definition introduction paragraph The first paragraph in an essay; it almost always includes the main idea, claim, or thesis statement body paragraph A section of an essay in which topics are presented and supported conclusion paragraph The final paragraph in an essay in which the writer sums up his or her argument claim An argument or point that has not yet been proved evidence Information that helps to support a claim, thesis, or main idea transition In writing, a word or group of words that helps a reader move from one idea to the next audience The person or people to whom you are writing or speaking
