May 11, 2017 To the editor of The Tyee. On 21 November 2008, your newspaper published an article by Dorothy Woodend headlined Generation Velcro. I am writing this letter to point out irrelevant comparisons involved in it and how nominal it is to tie a shoe lace as lovely Velcro is at blame for the entire third graders who are not able to tie their own shoes. According to the article, Velcro will result in ‘loss of knowledge (Jane Jacobs)’ of tying a shoe lace but how can we expect a third grader to tie his own shoe, I mean he has his own life drawing bugs bunny and tails behind kitties. It just never appeared that big of deal until recently. I remember Velcro wasn’t available when I was a kid, therefore as the need to tie my own shoe persisted I mastered the skill of tying my shoe lace at the age of 5.
