Based on what you have learned through the reading and lectures, explain how "painting and calligraphy are one" in the following two paintings. (200-250 words) Literati could do both painting and calligraphy. They could combine the two into one. Writing, which has been a functional tool, was transformed into the ultimate form of self-expression. Both visual form or the semantic meaning of the words were means for the Literati to express themselves. this new form of writing, called calligraphy, was elevated to an art, widely practiced by the educated elite. Pieces of calligraphy were collected as works of art and all of these new developments were discussed in a fast-growing theoretical literature. calligraphy was the highest form of art in China's culture, regarded by the Literati, as even more prestigious than painting. it was practiced by the upper class, Literati included. The first piece of calligraphy is by Mi Fu. It is called"Coral". He wrote that he had a piece of a coral reef. the tool word Shanhu, coral, are here. Next to them he drew an
