Fayth Stephenson Article Summary II Prof. Meirowitz 23 March 2018 The Proprietary House The Proprietary House, located in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, is best known as one of the most historic buildings in the United States. During its prime, the Proprietary House served as a hotel, a retirement home, a boarding house, a hotel, and most notably, the residence of the last Royal Governor of New Jersey. Today, it serves as a museum and witness to over 250 years of American history. Historically, it was apart of Samuel Holland’s plan in developing Perth Amboy. This development included, the Provincial Records Office, Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, Market Square, The Green, Court House/City Hall, Market Street, Burying Ground, Middlesex County Jail, Smith Street, King’s Arms Tavern, and Parker Castle. William Franklin, the son of Benjamin Franklin, served as the Royal Governor and resided within the Proprietary House. He was sworn in on the steps of Perth Amboys City Hall. William was instrumental in producing funds for city
