Discussion Board 2 It is important as a healthcare consumer to understand the history of the United States health care delivery system. How it operates today, who participates in the system, what legal and ethical issues arise as a result of the system, and what problems continue to plague the healthcare system. We are all consumers of healthcare but yet, in many instances, we are ignorant of what we are actually purchasing. If for example, we were going to spend $1000 on an item, many of us would research the product and read reviews to determine if what we are purchasing is the best product for us. This same concept should be applied to purchasing healthcare services (“Overview of the US healthcare delivery system”, n.d., chapter 1). The Purpose that an understanding of the history of health care delivery in the United States serves is that, it is necessary for understanding the main characteristics of today’s medical delivery system (Shi & Singh, 2013). So what factors have been predominant in shaping U.S. health care and what have been their effects? These factors and their effects are: 1. Cultural Beliefs and Values: Our cultural beliefs are changing as we have become self-reliant and think welfare assistance is needed only for the needy. People who even have Medicaid will not use it because they feel like they don’t want to be on the public door. However now that a lot of people are on the public door with the recent recession, some of these cultural beliefs and values are changing. Some experts have agreed
