PSYC 516 M IDTERM O RAL A SSIGNMENT I NSTRUCTIONS You will answer a total of 5 questions orally on video, using YouTube, and will have a maximum of 5 minutes to record each answer. You will post the link to your YouTube video in the appropriate assignment area of Blackboard. Ensure your account and video are public. Chapter 1 How have recent historical events affected the course of research in organizational psychology? Give an example of an event and the resulting outcome. One can say that the earliest example of organizational psychology was when the Midianite priest Jethro advised his son in law Moses on how to staff and organize the Israelites. If that’s the case, the bible is full of great examples of organizational psychology, especially Jesus and his work with his disciples. In a more modern approach, organizational psychology was truly established in the early 20 th century by people like Munsterberg, Scott and Bingham. The Hawthorne studies in the 1920’s was a big influencer of modern organizational psychology, helping with the growth of unions. In the 1940’s and into the 50’s, WWII influenced the development of Human Relations. In the 1960’s during the Vietnam war, APA recognizes and labels Industrial and Organizational psychology making it an official part of psychology. From the 1980’s to the 2000’s, changes in the global economy and technology allow I/O psychology to influence work environments, creating better understanding of “work” and “job”. Today, I/O psychology is focusing on the aging population and retirement (baby boomers), work safety and emergency preparedness (Post 9-11) and job insecurity (recession) Chapter 3 Describe the socialization process for graduate students in your program. Is the program successful in socializing newcomers and creating job embeddedness?
