Table 3: Melting Point Data Compound Name Time the Compound Took to Melt Melting Order (or, indicate if the compound did not melt) Type of Bond Sucrose 2:11:12 2 covalent Sodium Chloride did not melt 3 ionic Stearic Acid 28:05 1 covalent Post-Lab Questions 1. Which compound melted first? Did this agree with your prediction from Pre-Lab Question 2? Explain why or why not. The stearic acid melted first. The prediction I made in the pre lab was correct. The more complex nature of the covalent bond, the easier it is break down under the application of heat. 2. Did any bubbling compounds release an odor or undergo a color change? Yes, the sucrose changed color. It started as a white powder and changed to clear liquid and then to brown liquid. The stearic acid released a pungent odor. 3. Which of the three samples in these experiments have covalent bonds? Which samples have ionic bonds? Explain your answer using data from the experiment.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
